Title race meets relegation battle

What was at one stage a three team Scudetto race is now very much a two horse race, and Inter might streak clear with the final hurdle approaching.

The champions appear to be peaking at the perfect time, just as Napoli look to be fading. Tuesday's impressive late win at Bayern Munich continued the Nerazzurri's treble charge, and they now have the chance to pile the pressure on former manager Antonio Conte and his side.

A win on Saturday against Cagliari will move them six points clear at the top of Serie A for at least 48 hours prior to Napoli's clash with Empoli. Anything else would be a major surprise.

Not only are Simone Inzaghi's side in fine form, but they come up against one of their favourite domestic opponents, having scored in their last 25 home games against the Rossoblu. In fact, no side has scored more against Cagliari than Inter - 152 in 87 Serie A games. In summary: expect goals.

Empoli are the visitors to the Diego Armando Maradona on Monday, looking to climb out of the relegation zone with a win - they sit two points behind 17th placed Leece and six from 15th placed Cagliari - but that's something they have failed to achieve in 2025.

Roberto D'Aversa's side are winless in 16 Serie A games, which should extend to 17th against Napoli, albeit they have issues of their own. The Partenopei have won just two of their last nine league games, drawing six times.

Likewise, they may have beaten Empoli earlier in the campaign, but did lose both league clashes last season. All three games ended 1-0.

Could this be a weekend both the title race and relegation battle take a twist?

An Eternal City derby with even more edge

Prior to their first league clash of the season on January 5, Lazio sat a mammoth 15 points clear of their great rivals, Roma.

Heading into the second derby of the season, there is just two points between the capital sides.

Roma's 2-0 win in the "home" game at the Stadio Olimpico kickstarted a stunning 2025 for Claudio Ranieri, whose third stint in charge of the Giallorossi has gone better than anyone could have predicted.

They remain unbeaten in the league in the new year, with their 15-game run the second best across the big five leagues, and a seven-game winning streak only snapped by last weekend's draw with Juventus.

Their 33 points in the 13 games of 2025 is 13 more than Lazio, who have stumbled significantly of late, most notably in a harrowing 5-0 loss to Bologna. A shock Europa League defeat to Bodø/Glimt did nothing to improve the mood around Marco Baroni's side.

They do, however, have a strong record at "home" in the derby, having not lost any of the last nine. They will need to make it 10 if they are to avoid being leapfrogged by Roma this weekend.

A win for either side could put them right in Champions League contention, which only adds to an always red-hot derby in the Eternal City.

A spicy Sunday in Bergamo

Is this the clash of the two most likeable sides in Italy? Probably.

It's also a game with major implications for the Champions League, with the two currently sitting in third (Atalanta) and fourth (Bologna), a point apart, and with several teams nipping at their heels.

Just a few weeks ago, Gian Piero Gasperini's men had their sights set on a first Scudetto. The generational 4-0 win at Juventus had them dreaming, but it has been followed by a wretched run of form.

La Dea have lost their last three league games without scoring, and when you look at their home form in 2025 and Champions League exit to Club Brugge, perhaps the rout in Turin was an outlier.

Atalanta have failed to win any of their seven Serie A games at the Gewiss Stadium in the new year, not scoring in their last four and collecting just four points in total.

They also come up against what is fast becoming their bogey side. Bologna have won the last three games between the sides, including a Coppa Italia quarter-final win in Bergamo in February.

Vicenzo Italiano has done a stunning job since picking up the reins from Thiago Motta, pushing for Europe again and having near-booked their spot in the cup final.

Can he put another one over Gasperini or will Atalanta bounce back?

Must-win for Conceição?

It might seem ridiculous given he's barely 100 days into the job, but Milan boss Sérgio Conceição's job is under serious scrutiny if rumours are to believed.

The former Porto coach replaced Paulo Fonseca in late December, and has experienced a very mixed time at the San Siro, and one that can be near-split down the middle.

Having lost just one of his first seven Serie A games, the 50-year-old has suffered defeat on four occasions in the seven since. Coupled with a dismal Champions League elimination to Feyenoord, and things have become increasingly negative.

Kyle Walker fracturing his elbow this week only added to their woes, and Friday night sees them take on one of their least favourite sides of the last two decades.

Surprisingly, Milan have lost eight of their last 16 Serie A games to Udinese - only Inter and Juventus have beaten the Rossoneri more times since 2009.

They have won their last two meetings with the North Eastern side though, and could really do with making it three both for any hopes of European football next season, and perhaps Conceição's employment status.

Tudor trial run continues

While one recently-appointed manager of a fallen giant could be gone at the end of the season, might another be kept on with a successful trial period?

Igor Tudor was parachuted into Juventus on a short-term deal to replace the beleaguered Thiago Motta, and has already made a big impact in his two games in charge.

The one-time Juve defender has not only presided over a win against Genoa and a very credible draw with a rampant Roma, but put his own stamp on the side. The system has immediately been changed from Motta's 4-2-3-1 to his preferred 3-4-2-1, with an added aggression encouraged.

Tudor also made Manuel Locatelli club captain after his predecessor rotated the armband, and reaped dividends with the midfielder netting in the capital last weekend.

17th-placed Lecce represent the near-perfect opponent for the Croatian to continue his good start in charge, with the strugglers having failed to win any of their last eight league game. They have also not won against the Old Lady since 2011.

A win could see Juve climb back into the top four, which could be the deciding factor in Tudor staying put beyond June.
