Goals guaranteed in Inter-Atalanta

The headline act from Serie A this weekend comes to kick it all off on Friday night when champions Inter welcome Europa League holders Atalanta across Lombardy.

Inter are on four points from their opening two games, while Atalanta are one behind having suffered a surprise loss to a Ché Adams-inspired Torino last time out.

But aside from the obvious what makes this one appointment viewing? The statistics guarantee goals.

Atalanta (4.9) and Inter (4.4) have recorded a higher xG across the opening two Serie A matchdays than any other teams. Expect entertainment.

Can Roma snap Juve’s perfect streak?

Although there have been only two games played in Serie A, only one team has managed to win both fixtures: Juventus.

They’re set for their toughest test so far when they take on Roma, who have been uninspiring so far under Daniele De Rossi, particularly in the final third.

There is no better fixture for their forwards to find their feet than this one though, particularly for Matias Soulé, who may have a point to prove against his former club, and Paulo Dybala, who will be eager to endear himself further to the Giallorossi faithful after rejecting a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

If early form is anything to go by though, Thiago Motta’s side have been a force to be reckoned with and De Rossi will have his hands full in trying to inspire Roma to a result against his old midfield team-mate.

Milan out to stave off unwanted history

The Paulo Fonseca era at Milan has not gotten off to a good start but a trip to the capital against an old rival gives the ex-Roma boss the chance to get things going.

Injuries and other issues have meant he has been unable to field a settled side yet and that’s set to continue as he aims to avoid setting an unwanted record.

Should Milan lose, they would be on one point after three games which would mark their worst ever start to a Serie A season in the three points for a win era and their fourth poorest overall.

So are there reasons for Rossoneri optimism? Well, yes.

In the embryonic stages of the season, they have attempted more shots (43), touched the ball most in the opposition box (82) and registered the highest percentage of successful passes in the opposing half (88%) than any other side, while Rafael Leão has created more chances, played the most passes into the penalty box and attempted more shots than any other player.

If things click, they will hurt someone.

Can Raspadori stake claim ahead of big arrival?

This is perhaps Giacomo Raspadori’s last chance to impress ahead of likely being relegated to a bench role at Napoli.

With uncertainty over his future, even if Victor Osimhen does stay beyond deadline day, he’s unlikely to feature having sat out both of his side’s first two fixtures and with Romelu Lukaku’s arrival only being confirmed on Thursday afternoon, he won’t play too big a role, if any.

So with neither of those players leading the line, it offers a final opportunity for Raspadori to convince Conte that he can play an important part, having done little to really capture the imagination in their opening two games.

He’ll know the difficulty of the task but the only way to win people over is with goals and newly-promoted Parma’s visit may give him an ideal opportunity to fill his boots.

Everyone on the board

With two games played, every club has picked up a point to get going except one.

Lecce are currently sitting bottom with two defeats to begin the campaign and will be desperate to avoid going into the international break with a zero next to their name.

Cagliari visit the mainland aiming to ensure their pointless run continues and there is hope for Lecce that their run will end, having gone unbeaten in their last five league games against the Isolani.

If they do lose, it will be just the third time in top flight history they have began with with three successive defeats and they are also out to set an unwanted club record of going six straight Serie A games without scoring.

Surprise new signing Ante Rebić should certainly help with that after sporting director Pantaleo Corvino worked his magic again. He’s set to start on the bench.
