Some of the greatest footballers of all time have been left-footed and the Premier League is currently home to some superb lefties.

Rarer than their right-footed counterparts, there is often a mystique that surrounds those who favour the left. Hakim Ziyech was the latest Premier League name to demonstrate the quality in his left peg last weekend, curling home a stunning goal during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Following Ziyech’s stunning strike at Stamford Bridge, we’ve decided to look at some of the best left feet in the division.

Here are five Premier League players with a wand of a left foot.

Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech produced a moment of genius to open the scoring for Chelsea against Spurs, bending home a brilliant goal from distance that left Hugo Lloris rooted to the spot.

Ziyech rose to prominence in the colours of Ajax, where he provided 130 goals and assists in just 165 appearances for the Dutch side before a £37m move to Chelsea.

The Moroccan’s technical gifts have often seen him share set-piece situations despite a struggle for consistency during his time in the Premier League, but he is a footballer capable of sublime quality and has created a catalogue of stunning goals throughout his career.

Given time and space to pick his pass or spot, there is an unerring precision that comes from Ziyech’s left foot with his wondergoal against Spurs the latest in a long lineage of high-class moments.

Chelsea will now hope for greater consistency from a footballer whose best has often resembled sorcery.

Martin Odegaard

Martin Odegaard is growing into his role as Arsenal’s creative heartbeat, having found his feet since turning a loan move from Real Madrid into a permanent deal.

The Norway international oozes class as he floats freely behind the Gunners’ forward line, orchestrating proceedings in the final third with his subtle touch and eye for a pass.

Odegaard has scored four goals and provided three assists in 15 league starts for the North Londoners this season and is improving with each passing performance as he shoulders increased responsibility in Mikel Arteta’s side.

Tasked with making the side tick, he looks set to be a major part of Arsenal’s plans moving forward as the Gunners look to return to the Champions League stage.

Andy Robertson

This feature is dominated with forward talents, each often demonstrating their left-footed wizardry in the final third.

Andy Robertson deserves inclusion, however, with the Liverpool left-back among the Premier League’s most creative footballers.

Robertson and Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold have set new standards for production from full-back in recent seasons, with the duo having combined for a staggering 86 assists since the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

Each have exactly 43 assists during that period, with only Kevin De Bruyne (53) having provided more assists than Robertson in that time with the Scotland international’s crossing from the left a trademark of Liverpool’s game.

He has hit a fine run of form in recent weeks after a testing start to the season, providing eight goal involvements (1G, 7A) across his past eight Premier League appearances.

Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez has been one of the Premier League’s most watchable players in recent seasons, the outrageously talented Algerian having often lit up fixtures in the colours of Leicester and Manchester City.

Mahrez has produced some spellbinding football when drifting inside off the right flank, cutting infield onto his left foot and leaving a trail of Premier League defenders in his wake.

He often appears to have a magnetic hold over the ball with an adhesive first touch, whilst his collection of glorious goals includes a series of stunning strikes bent into the far corner.

Mahrez has scored 72 goals and provided 50 assists during his Premier League career, winning the league title on three occasions.

He has tormented left-backs for several seasons and adds a sense of chaotic unpredictability to Pep Guardiola’s plans, a maverick who can fashion the spectacular out of nothing.

Raphinha

There’s definitely a Riyad Mahrez-vibe about Leeds’ latest star, with Raphinha having attracted interest from England and Europe’s elite since his arrival at Elland Road.

The Brazilian signed for Leeds from Rennes in a £17m deal in 2020 and enjoyed an impressive first season in the Premier League, scoring nine goals and providing six assists as Marcelo Bielsa’s side enjoyed a strong return to the top division.

Raphinha has continually found a way to fashion chances this season, leading Leeds’ rankings for shots, crosses and key passes per 90 minutes this season.

The 25-year-old has also scored eight goals in the 2021/22 season to date and Leeds look set to face a fight to keep the winger out of the clutches of world football’s biggest sides.

He has already began to make an impression in the famous yellow shirts of Brazil, scoring twice in five caps since his international debut in 2021.
