Five Premier League players facing uncertain futures after the transfer window closed

The transfer window for Premier League clubs is now closed following a flurry of activity on deadline day last week.

Several players, such as Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho, got much needed moves away from their clubs, while others stayed put and face uncertain futures heading into the next few months.

Unless they are willing to move to the Turkish Super Lig, they will have to wait until January to flee the nest, or hope that their fortunes change in the meantime.

We’ve picked out a few who are at a crossroads in their career.

Ben Chilwell – Chelsea

Chelsea culled their ‘Bomb Squad’ by loaning out Sterling to Arsenal, Armando Broja to Everton and Djordje Petrovic to Strasbourg, but they were unable to shift Ben Chilwell after offering him to Manchester United.

The left-back is unfancied by Enzo Maresca, who prefers inverted full-backs who can tuck into midfield. It seems unlikely he will earn a place back in the starting lineup, and his high wages are a major obstacle to finding a new club.

Kieran Tierney – Arsenal

A move away from Arsenal this summer was scuppered by a hamstring injury Kieran Tierney sustained at Euro 2024, leaving him to stew on the sidelines for the next few months.

The Scottish left-back, who spent last season on loan with Real Sociedad, was previously linked with Newcastle United and should find it easier to locate a new club within the Premier League than Chilwell.

Christian Eriksen – Man Utd

The Denmark international finds himself on the fringes of Erik ten Hag’s squad thanks to his advancing age and the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

Eriksen made his first appearance for the Red Devils at the weekend, coming on for the final five minutes of Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, after being an unused substitute in their opening two league games.

Caoimhín Kelleher – Liverpool

The goalkeeper has been an excellent backup to Alisson Becker over the years, but the time has come for Caoimhín Kelleher to make a definitive decision on career.

This much became clear after Liverpool signed Georgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for an initial £25m this summer. The Georgia international will remain in Spain for this season, but he will almost certainly be the future number one whenever the current one moves on or retires.

After making ten Premier League appearances last season, Kelleher was the subject of two rejected transfer offers from Nottingham Forest. Having stated his own desire to be a regular starter, a move in either of the next two windows could be on the cards.

“I’m at that stage in my career where I need to make that next step and play week in, week out,” he said while on Ireland duty in the summer. “Wanting to be No 1 is really a reflection on the season and ambitions.”

The Corkman is in a different situation to the others on this list, but the next step of his career will be no less critical.

Sergio Reguilon – Spurs

Tottenham did a really thorough job of offloading the fringe members of their squad this past summer, selling, loaning out or releasing 12 first-team players.

One guy who they just cannot shake off, however, is Sergio Reguilon. The Spaniard is clearly not a part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans and has been loaned to three different clubs over the past two years.

The left-back finds himself in limbo now than the Premier League and Saudi Pro League deadlines have passed. He wants an exit, but the only possible destination at this time is Turkey.
