Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has been sacked as the club’s head coach just 18 months after returning to Stamford Bridge.
But he hasn’t been the only example of the prodigal son returning home only to fail to bring the good times back with him.
Here are five ex-players who may regret that they ever went back.
Oh, Frank.
It had all started so well. There was a youth revolution at Stamford Bridge, qualification for the Champions League was secured and he even led them to an FA Cup final.
But then over £200m was spent on transfers, expectations ramped up and Lampard left the club through the back door on Monday with Chelsea sat ninth in the league after losing six of their 19 Premier League games so far this season.
We doubt anything could ruin Alan Shearer’s legacy at Newcastle United. He did score nearly 200 goals for them, after all.
But coming in as caretaker manager to try and save the club from relegation in 2009 and in turn ending up relegated is a minor blot on the copy book.
There are many supporters that consider Souness to be the best midfielder to have played for the club.
The Scot won five league titles and three European Cups during his time as a player, but his return as manager in 1991 was catastrophic.
He dismantled the famous Boot Room, signed some of the worst players to wear the Red shirt (ahem, Torben Piechnik) and was sacked three years laters with 45 defeats and just one FA Cup to his name.
The embodiment of a top class player not necessarily being a top class coach.
Inzaghi was hired in the summer of 2014 but lasted just a year in the San Siro dugout. In that time, he led the club to their worst season in over three decades, as Milan finished 10th in Serie A.
Solari won two LaLiga titles and the Champions League during his five years playing for Real, but oversaw a tumultuous 133 day reign as head coach.
The Argentine stepped in to take over from Julen Lopetegui but oversaw a chaotic run of results which included a El Clásico defeat in the Copa del Rey and a 4-1 hammering at home to Ajax in the last 16 of the Champions League.
