The Milan derby, or as the locals know call it – La Derby della Madonnina – will be the talk of all Europe this weekend as Luciano Spalletti and Gennaro Gattuso go head-to-head.
Black and red vs black and blue. History vs tradition. Two of Europe’s most storied names going at it in front of 80,000 people. It truly is one of the continent’s greatest rivalries.
The story of the derby is the story of some of the best players to ever grace the game and a surprising number of those have actually played for both Inter and AC Milan.
35 in total have represented the two sides, but here’s our pick of the top five who have scored for both in the derby.
It took the Divine Ponytail four minutes to score in his first ever derby to for the Rossoneri against their fiercest rivals. Marcel Desailly with the pass. Baggio with the beautiful finish. Someone inject this mid-90s Serie A directly into my veins.
But in 2000, just two years after leaving the red side of Milan, the Italy great popped up in the black and blue and scored against his old side in a Coppa Italia quarter-final.
Fresh off the back of winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, Clarence Seedorf rocked up at Inter and did this in his first derby.
The Nerazzuri would rue selling the Netherlands midfielder to their cross-city rivals though, when in a Coppa Italia semi-final he netted this absolutely ridiculous late winner.
In the first derby post the Calciopoli scandal which saw Inter stripped of their title in 2005-06, Ibrahimović was on hand to ease the fans pain in a 4-3 win.
In 2010 though, Ibra goes to the Rossoneri and takes all of 180 seconds to score the only goal of the game against his old side.
A journeyman striker if ever there was one, Maurizio Ganz never stayed anywhere very long but always left a lasting impression. One of his last acts as an Inter player was to score in the derby before eventually making way for Ronaldo.
It was to Fabio Capello’s Rossoneri that he eventually joined a few months later, and scored in an historic 5-0 Coppa win – the biggest margin of victory in a derby, ever.
The original and the best. Ronaldo came to Inter as the greatest player in the world in 1997, and scored a brilliant lob in his first ever derby for a 2-0 win.
Fast forward 11 years and after an injury-ravaged decade, the Brazilian was back at San Siro and in his only derby appearance for Milan showed everyone what they had been missing.
