Five of the best Premier League loan signings this summer

Raheem Sterling (Arsenal)

Arsenal agreed a late deal to sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea after the winger was informed that he does not feature in the club’s plans. The 29-year-old has landed on his feet with a cross-capital switch to Arsenal, who have added Sterling to their forward line.

Mikel Arteta knows the player well from his time at Manchester City and has brought in an experienced option to add much-needed depth to wide options. It’s a deal that makes financial and footballing sense for Arsenal, who have not paid a loan fee and will cover less than 50% of the player’s wages. For a player who boasts 82 caps for England, 123 top-flight goals and four Premier League winner’s medals, that’s brilliant value.

Trevoh Chalobah (Crystal Palace)

Another of Chelsea’s cast-offs, the Blues made the decision that Trevoh Chalobah would not continue with the club this season. Left out of the club’s pre-season tour, Chalobah’s push towards the exit door was perhaps PSR-motivated, though Chelsea failed to land a fee.

Instead, Chalobah has crossed the capital to sign for Crystal Palace on a season-long loan deal. Having been courted by Bayern Munich just last summer, the Eagles will see Chalobah as a coup after selling Joachim Andersen to Fulham.

Kalvin Phillips (Ipswich Town)

Kalvin Phillips has joined newly promoted Ipswich Town on a season-long loan deal as the midfielder looks to reignite a career that has stalled. Unwanted at Manchester City, he struggled during a tough loan spell at West Ham last season.

Phillips’ stock has fallen significantly since he was named England Men’s Player of the Year after helping the Three Lions reach the European Championship final in 2021. Still just 28, however, the environment at Ipswich could bring out the best in him as he bolsters the midfield of Kieran McKenna’s fearless side.

James Ward-Prowse (Nottingham Forest)

Julen Lopetegui has sought a new direction in midfield this summer with James Ward-Prowse allowed to leave West Ham on loan. A £25m signing just last summer, the former Southampton skipper fell out of favour during the second half of the campaign and has been unable to convince the new head coach.

Nottingham Forest have snapped up the 29-year-old, whose energy and set-piece threat add a real weapon to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. Ward-Prowse scored seven goals and provided 12 assists across all competitions for the Hammers last season.

Jean-Clair Todibo (West Ham)

West Ham’s eye-catching summer of recruitment included the arrival of Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice on an initial loan deal.

Todibo had agreed a deal to join Manchester United before UEFA blocked the transfer, while Juventus also pushed to sign the France international before West Ham won the race. Highly coveted in recent transfer windows, Todibo will form part of a new-look West Ham defence as the Irons look to get back into European competition.

Cool in possession, last season he ranked second in Ligue 1 for touches and led the division for progressive carrying distance.
