The Merseyside Derby rarely disappoints and Everton and Liverpool will lock horns again in the Premier League this evening.

A local grudge match with plenty of bite, there’s been no shortage of incident and great goals when the Merseyside rivals have clashed in the Premier League era.

Ahead of tonight’s clash at Goodison Park, we’ve remembered some special strikes from the fixture.

Five of the best – Merseyside Derby goals:

Steven Gerrard – Liverpool (2001)

It’s fair to say that Steven Gerrard was not the most popular player on the blue half of the city. Liverpool’s beating heart for much of his career with the club, Gerrard developed a happy habit of delivering in derby games against Everton.

Only against Aston Villa did the midfielder score more goals against in his career, after netting ten times against the Toffees in all competitions for Liverpool.

His first arrived in a 3-1 win at Goodison Park early in the 2001/02 season, as Gerrard cancelled out Kevin Campbell’s early opener for Everton with a cracker.

Harry Kewell – Liverpool (2006)

Harry Kewell’s career with Liverpool never reached the heights expected, with the Australian attacker persistently plagued by fitness issues during his time at Anfield.

Every so often, however, Kewell provided a moment of magic to fleetingly remind us all of the quality that made him so sought-after at Leeds.

One of his best moments in a red shirt came during a Merseyside Derby clash with Everton in 2006, when Kewell let fly from the edge of the area. Tony Hibbert’s hesitancy in closing Kewell down was punished perfectly, as the winger fired a rocket into the top corner.

The goal sealed a win for 10-man Liverpool, who had seen Steven Gerrard sent off after only 18 minutes.

Mikel Arteta – Everton (2010)

Everton boast a rather poor record in this fixture with just three wins in the Premier League since 2006.

One of those arrived in a memorable Merseyside Derby in 2010, as super strikes from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta earned Everton local bragging rights.

After the former had thumped the Toffees ahead, Arteta produced a moment of magic as the Spaniard’s sweet hit flew past Pepe Reina in goal.

Phil Jagielka – Everton (2014)

Phil Jagielka didn’t score many goals. In 385 appearances in an Everton shirt, he scored just 19 times.

On his résumé, however, the centre-back has the finest goal ever scored in a Premier League Merseyside Derby. Dejan Lovren must have thought he had done enough when nodding away a cross in the 92nd minute, as Liverpool looked to protect a 1-0 lead.

Jagielka, however, had other ideas. With time running out and striding onto the loose ball, the defender blasted in an injury-time equaliser to rescue Everton an unlikely point at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (2018)

Mohamed Salah’s first season at Liverpool produced a back catalogue of memorable moments, as the Egyptian broke records with a 44-goal campaign for the Reds.

Winner of the Premier League Golden Boot, one of his best came in a Merseyside Derby win over Everton, as Salah twisted, turned, and curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Salah’s strike saw him win the 2018 Puskas Award and while the jury remains out on that level of recognition, beating outrageous Champions League overhead kicks from Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, it was a glorious goal nonetheless.
