As Liverpool prepare for life without Johnny Heitinga, the attention now turns to who might step into the assistant manager role beside Arne Slot. Heitinga, a key part of the backroom team that led Liverpool to a stunning Premier League title in Slot’s first season, is reportedly being courted by Ajax for their head coach position, according to Fabrizio Romano.
It’s a natural step up for the former Everton man, and Liverpool have granted him permission to talk with the Dutch giants. As Anfield Watch rightly put it, “It’s probably one of the most coveted jobs for any Dutch managers.” Given the significance of this potential departure, identifying the right replacement will be crucial.
The most logical option is Marino Pusic. He worked as Arne Slot’s assistant at AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, which makes him a strong candidate to reunite with the Liverpool boss.
As Anfield Watch notes, “Pusic has been successful with Shakhtar winning the league last season however he missed out on the title this season.” Now out of work, he could be tempted by the lure of working at Anfield again. Familiarity with Slot’s methods and a shared tactical language could ease the transition and maintain momentum going into next season.
Few names stir emotions on Merseyside quite like Steven Gerrard. While his managerial career has had highs and lows, Gerrard’s football intelligence and ability to connect with young talent remain unquestioned.

“Just look at the key role he played in the early development of Curtis Jones while he was the club’s U18 manager,” Anfield Watch pointed out. His return could galvanise both the dressing room and the terraces. However, Gerrard may have ambitions that stretch beyond an assistant role, which makes this move more sentimental than practical.
Another Dutchman with deep Liverpool ties, Dirk Kuyt is an intriguing candidate. He has managerial experience and has also shadowed Slot, as the article explains: “after his position as the U19 team’s manager, Kuyt shadowed Slot as well.”

Although Kuyt’s recent record in Belgium has been patchy, his understanding of the club’s culture and his relationship with the coaching staff and supporters make him a credible choice. As a figure who commands respect, Kuyt would likely slot in well.
Thiago Alcântara might be a left-field shout, but one loaded with potential. Having taken coaching badges and briefly worked at Barcelona, his football brain is not in doubt. “He could already be a brilliant addition to replace Heitinga,” wrote Anfield Watch.

His rapport with current players and influence on younger midfielders like Trey Nyoni make him a compelling option. While coaching remains untested ground for him, few doubt that he has the intelligence to excel.
Last but not least, Fernando Torres, the beloved striker, is quietly building a managerial reputation at Atletico Madrid. “Torres plays quick attacking football, with his preference for the 4-2-3-1 formation,” the article states.

He would bring a fresh tactical perspective and an Anfield legacy, but this may be a move that comes slightly too early in his coaching career. Still, it’s clear that Torres is watching developments at Anfield closely, and the connection remains strong.
The search for a new assistant manager comes at a delicate time. With Arne Slot having just delivered a Premier League title in his debut season, continuity in the coaching setup is key. Whoever comes in must not just support Slot tactically, but also help maintain the unity and intensity that defined last season.
Marino Pusic appears the safest and most strategic choice. Slot will trust him, and he’ll slot straight into the current system. However, from a fan perspective, the return of Steven Gerrard would send shockwaves of excitement through Anfield. It would be more than a PR win – it could rejuvenate Gerrard’s coaching path and give him an inside track to a future managerial role.
Thiago is perhaps the most intriguing candidate. If he’s genuinely interested in coaching now, it’s hard to overlook someone of his footballing IQ. His presence alone could elevate training sessions and help younger players flourish.
The dreamer’s pick? Torres. But Liverpool need results, not sentiment. Slot will likely go with someone he knows, trusts and who can immediately contribute to the elite standards he’s establishing.
Let’s not forget: the next assistant manager isn’t just filling in. They’ll be helping defend a Premier League crown. This appointment matters more than it might first appear.
