Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation for the 2025/26 season remains a puzzle with several moving pieces.

The Blaugrana’s plans depend on Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s recovery, as well as the uncertain futures of Wojciech Szczesny and Inaki Pena.

The veteran star, who has taken over as Hansi Flick’s preferred choice in goal in Ter Stegen’s absence, has a contract which expires this summer. Meanwhile, Pena’s deal runs out next year and has not been offered an extension yet.

As such, Mundo Deportivo reports that as a precaution, Barcelona’s sporting department has been actively scouting potential replacements.

Their shortlist includes Diogo Costa (FC Porto), Alvaro Valles (free agent), Bart Verbruggen (Brighton & Hove Albion), Mio Backhaus (Werder Bremen), and Joan Garcia (Espanyol).

Costa is a player that has been linked with the Blaugrana for a long time now with club director Deco believed to be an admirer of the Portuguese international. However, his transfer fee could be a major issue.

Verbruggen’s contract with Brighton runs until 2028 and he is unlikely to come cheap either. Interestingly, though, the Premier League club are also interested in Backhaus, another Barça target.

A move for Valles appears unlikely even though he recently terminated his contract with Las Palmas as the 27-year-old has his sights set on joining Real Betis.

The report adds that Garcia is very highly appreciated within Barcelona, with the Espanyol goalkeeper making a big impression on the club’s sporting department.

However, a move for him is practically impossible as Espanyol will not negotiate with Barça and the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United also want him.
