Blackburn Rovers have been working on a deal to bring Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo to Ewood Park before the transfer window slams shut on August 30, and despite stumbling blocks, the hierarchy at the Lancashire outfit have been urged to splash the cash on a permanent deal.

The 23-year-old has spent the last two years in Scotland with Rangers, having joined the club from Schalke in Germany.

But, this summer, Blackburn have taken an interest in him, and with the sales of Sammie Szmodics and Sam Gallagher, John Eustace has wanted to bring more firepower to Rovers' attack - with Matondo potentially being the player to bring that new dynamic to the team.

However, after scoring twice for the Scottish giants in their 6-0 win over Ross County over the weekend, Rangers' manager, Philippe Clement, has cast doubts over a move still being on.

"I think he’s going to stay, yeah. Otherwise, somebody needs to come with enough money," Clement said.

"That you never know in the last week, but my idea is that he will be here this season.

"I hope that he continues what he’s been doing now. And it’s again about details, working on that."

Rabbi Matondo's pace and creativity is what Blackburn Rovers need

Although this recent update is not good news for Blackburn supporters, Clement has also stated: "If somebody comes in with enough money then the club will always be open for talks".

This is where the sales of Gallagher and Szmodics helps Eustace, with Rovers potentially having the funds to sanction a deal for the Wales international.

Matondo has scored seven goals in the Scottish Premiership since the start of last season, while also picking up five assists in 22 games.

This run of form has impressed FLW'sBlackburn Fan Pundit, Toby Wilding, and he would like to see Matondo in the blue-and-white of Rovers by the time the transfer window shuts on August 30.

Toby told FLW; " John Eustace has made a point all summer really about wanting to get some extra additions on the wing and particularly some that that will bring some extra pace to the side.

"This is certainly one that fits that bill. Obviously, his end product is promising as well in terms of both taking and creating chances, so I like the look of him in that sense.

"He's been playing at a decent level with Rangers, so it's definitely one that I'd be pleased to see happen."

Rabbi Matondo should be signed permanently if given the chance

Setbacks are ordinary in transfer sagas, particularly during this point of the window when clubs do not want to sell players that could make an impact on their team.

However, Blackburn must push for Matondo due to his high potential, and the fact that he is a player that can win games purely by himself.

At 23, he is one for both the future and now, and is a potential signing that excites Toby.

"I would like to think it would be a permanent deal. It gives it that longer term feel to it and just eases a bit of the pressure going forward into other transfer windows," Wilding added.

"Of course, if it does prove to be a success, it’s good to have someone like that around for a while.

"I think, as well, when you consider the funds that are there to be spent now with the money that's come in from the Sammie Szmodics deal, it might well be one that we are able to afford permanently."
