Aston Villa’s summer signing Daphne van Domselaar says that she would like to play UEFA Women’s Champions League football during her time in England.

The highly-rated Dutch international goalkeeper completed a move from FC Twente to Aston Villa yesterday. She will officially join the club on 1 July when she becomes a free agent.

Van Domselaar is one of the world’s up and coming young goalkeepers and she is a major addition to Carla Ward’s ever-evolving Aston Villa side. Speaking in her first interview with VillaTV, the player admitted that she is pleased to join The Villans.

“Aston Villa did really well this season, they finished fifth,” Van Domselaar said. “It is a very big club for me, they have done very well.

“I think that the WSL is very competitive, you can see that anyone can beat anyone.

“It is really great to join the club.”

Van Domselaar was asked about her ambitions at Aston Villa. The keeper is hoping to see her new club gatecrash the Barclays Women’s Super League’s top four next season. She also smiled and suggested a more ambitious longer-term goal.

She said “I want to play games at the highest level (in England). I maybe want to play some Champions League games too.

“Maybe we could aim for fourth next season.”

Van Domselaar will play outside of her native Netherlands for the first time in 2023/2024. The player arrives at Aston Villa with a great attitude; she wants to learn at every opportunity.

“I can learn from everyone because it is a new step,” the keeper said. “I have to get used to the girls, the club, the competition and the level.

“I think I can learn from everyone.”

Van Domselaar is the first new arrival at Aston Villa during the close season. The club are expected to make more impressive additions over the course of the summer.
