Real Madrid made the trip to Girona on Tuesday but were put to the sword as the hosts ran rampant and won 4-2.
Scorers: Castellanos 12′, 24′, 46′, 62′; Vinicius Junior 34′, Vazquez 85′
It was one-way traffic at Montilivi as one man made headlines and history against the reigning LaLiga champions.
On loan New York City FC striker Taty Castellanos made sure everyone in Spain knows his name after his instinctual form had the hosts in cruise control.
Real Madrid were without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois due to illness tonight, but don’t let his absence sway you, as the Girona star was superb over 90 minutes and made a mockery of the visiting defence.
Castellanos scored a header and beat Éder Militão in a foot race within 25 minutes to raucous cheers from home fans before Vinicius Junior pulled one back to suggest a comeback could be on the cards.
However, 46 seconds into the second half, Girona caught Madrid sleeping again, seeing Castellanos net his first LaLiga hat-trick, and manager Carlo Ancelotti hauled Nacho off immediately.
The last four players to net at least three times in the league against Los Blancos were Xabi Prieto (2013), Lionel Messi (2014), Luis Suarez (2018) and Carlos Soler (2020).
The striker would then score a fourth as Madrid imploded with Vinicius Junior unable to inflict real damage in the absence of Karim Benzema, Rodrygo lifeless and the midfield out of answers.
Substitute Lucas Vazquez made things a two-goal game after linking up with Vinicius, but it was too late for the visitors.
The result means Barcelona can go 14 points clear at the top over Real Madrid and Erling Haaland will be licking his chops ahead of the Champions League semi-final tie against Manchester City.
Meanwhile, Girona picked up three vital points and sit ninth in LaLiga following a historic night at home.
