Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom has became the first Premier League managerial casualty of the season with Chris Wilder taking over.

Heckingbottom took the Blades back to the top flight after gaining automatic promotion from the Championship in the 2022/23 season.

But life back in the Premier League has been brutal for United, who are bottom of the table with just five points from 14 games.

Heckingbottom’s final game in charge was a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

And former boss Wilder will return to Bramall Lane for the fourth time in his career (having also represented the Blades twice as a player).

The 56-year-old was previously in charge for five years before being sacked in March 2021 with the club bottom of the Premier League and since then had spells at Middlesbrough and Watford.
