First home win in sight

Eintracht are still without a home victory in the Bundesliga this season, but are aiming to change that against Union Berlin on Sunday.

Just like the Eagles, Union Berlin were involved in European competition in midweek as they recorded a 1-0 victory over Maccabi Haifa in the UEFA Europa Conference League to extend their unbeaten streak to three games in all competitions.

Oliver Glasner’s side, meanwhile, boast a run of five games without defeat and have the 15th best record of all teams across Europe’s top five leagues in their last 10 competitive outings. Only Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach have fared better in the Bundesliga in that timeframe.

Goals guaranteed

A spectacle is on the cards on Sunday, at least if last season’s meetings are anything to go by: a total of 13 goals were scored in the two leagues matches the teams contested, more than in any other fixture. The points were shared in a 3-3 draw in Berlin exactly a year ago on Sunday, while Eintracht won 5-2 at Deutsche Bank Park.

Union forward Taiwo Awoniyi has scored eight league goals so far this season, while Max Kruse found the net against Eintracht four times last season alone. As such, Glasner’s troops are likely to have plenty of defensive work to do, so Martin Hinteregger’s potential return to action is timely. The centre-back took part in the full training session on Friday and is set to be included in the matchday squad.

However, the game comes too soon for Christopher Lenz, who will watch the match against his former club from the stands ahead of an anticipated comeback next week.
