From Saudi setback to Spanish spotlight? Former Liverpool star emerges as low-cost option for Los Blancos

Roberto Firmino, the samba-hearted No. 9 who danced his way into Liverpool folklore, could be set for one final flourish under the lights of the Bernabéu.

The Brazilian forward, 33, is a free agent after his surprise departure from Saudi side Al Ahli — and Spanish giants Real Madrid have reportedly identified him as a potential low-cost solution in their search for a new striker.

A Saudi adventure turned sour

Firmino’s post-Liverpool chapter began with optimism. He joined Al Ahli in the summer of 2023 on a three-year deal, part of the Saudi Pro League’s multi-million-dollar charm offensive to lure elite talent from Europe’s top leagues.

But while the cheque cleared, the dream didn’t quite unfold as expected.

Despite being named club captain and contributing handsomely to their continental campaign — six goals, seven assists, and an MVP-winning performance in the AFC Champions League Elite final — Firmino found himself sidelined for domestic league action.

Al Ahli’s signing of Wenderson Galeno pushed the club over the Saudi Pro League’s foreign player limit. Head coach Matthias Jaissle had to make a call — and Firmino was the man sacrificed. It was a baffling decision given his influence and experience.

Even so, the Brazilian bowed out in style, captaining Al Ahli to their first-ever AFC Champions League title, providing both assists in the 2–0 win over Kawasaki Frontale. Then came the shock: a mutual agreement to part ways at season’s end.

Back in the European shop window

With no club ties and his fitness intact, Firmino suddenly presents an enticing prospect: a seasoned, technically gifted forward with Champions League pedigree and leadership experience.

According to Spanish daily AS, Real Madrid are exploring short-term striking options to supplement their frontline. With Kylian Mbappé’s arrival commanding headlines and resources, Madrid’s interest has turned toward players in the Joselu mould — veterans, low-cost, high-reliability.

Firmino fits that bill perfectly. While he no longer offers the relentless pressing of his Klopp-era peak, his footballing intelligence and ability to play between the lines remain elite. In a squad stacked with young firepower, he could be a stabilising figure — a mentor in boots.

A Bernabéu reunion on the cards?

A move to Madrid would also see Firmino reunite with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made waves with his headline-grabbing transfer to Los Blancos last week. That move sent shockwaves through Merseyside, but Firmino’s potential arrival in Spain would likely be met with warmth, not rancour.

The Brazilian departed Anfield on his own terms, with admiration intact and his song still echoing around the Kop. Few ex-Liverpool players remain as universally beloved.

What next for Bobby?

Whether Madrid firm up their interest remains to be seen, but Firmino’s future looks wide open. Europe’s top clubs may see his availability as an opportunity to add proven quality without a transfer fee.

What’s certain is that Firmino still has chapters to write. From Maceió to Merseyside, and now perhaps Madrid — the story of Bobby Dazzler isn’t over yet.
