The Philippines have achieved their first ever qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.

China, Japan and South Korea also won through the Women’s Asian Cup quarter-finals to book their places at FIFA WWC 2023.

The Philippines beat Chinese Taipei 4-3 on penalties, finishing deadlocked at 1-1 in normal time, as Quinley Quezada’s goal was cancelled out late on by Zhuo Li-ping.

Japan edged Australia 1-0 with an 87th-minute goal from Chelsea’s Ji So-yun.

China had to come from behind to defeat Vietnam 3-1, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung netting and Wang Shuang levelling before the break. Wang Shanshan and Tottenham’s Jiali Tang both scored in a two-minute spell to send the Steel Roses through.

Japan sank Thailand 7-0 as Yuika Sugasawa scored four times.

The three quarter final losers – other than Australia, who qualified for the World Cup as joint hosts – will play a single round-robin play-off. The best team after three matches will advance to the World Cup, and the remaining two teams will enter the inter-confederation play-offs.
