Fifa and Uefa have announced that all Russian clubs and the national team have been suspended from competing internationally until further notice.
The news comes following the country’s invasion of Ukraine last week.
The International Olympic Committee have already recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials be excluded from their competitions.
And Fifa and Uefa have now followed suit, confirming their stance in a statement on Monday.
“Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice,” read the statement.
“These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.
“Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.”
Additionally, Uefa have also confirmed that their sponsorship with Russian company Gazprom has now ended.
Several nations, including those who were set to face Russia in World Cup qualifiers later this month, already announced that they would not compete against any international side at any level representing Russia.
It is a reversal on FIFA’s initial decision over the weekend, which would have allowed the country to compete under the name ‘Football Union of Russia’, although they could not compete under their flag or national anthem.
