FIFA Women’s World Cup: Narrow wins for England and China, Argentina rescue point

Matchday nine at FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 saw England narrowly defeat Denmark, Argentina fightback to draw and China scrape past Haiti.

England made it back-to-back single-goal wins with an early strike enough to see off Denmark.

Lauren James fired the Lionesses in front from 20 yards but the first-half advantage was married by Keira Walsh being stretchered off.

Amalie Vangsgaard gave England the biggest scare with a header against the far post, while Beth England came on and headed narrowly wide.

Ten-player China edged Haiti by the only-goal of the game which featured a rush of penalty controversies.

China had Zhang Rui sent off after half an hour for a dangerous tackle and before the break, Nerilia Mondesir had a goal for Haiti ruled out for offsaide.

Melchie Dumornay was denied as goalkeeper Zhu Yu somehow scooped her shot over the bar.

Zhang Linyan won a 70th-minute penalty which Wang Shuang converted, Haiti were awarded a spot-kick in added time only for the referee to change her mind after a VAR review.

Argentina came from two goals down with 16 minutes to go to draw 2-2 with South Africa, as both nations got off the mark in Group G.

Thembi Kgatlana set up Linda Motlhalo to score before doubling the lead herself from Jermaine Seoposenwe’s delivery.

Sophia Braun replied with a half-volley from outside the box and Romina Nunez came off the bench to head home the equaliser
