FIFA approve Aymeric Laporte’s international switch to Spain | OneFootball

FIFA have approved Aymeric Laporte’s international switch from France to Spain, with the Manchester City defender now available for selection for this summer’s European Championship.

Laporte has won 51 caps for France at youth level but has never been capped for the senior side, despite being called up to the Les Bleus’ squad in both 2018 and 2019.

The centre-back has been continually overlooked by the national side in recent seasons however, despite starring for a Manchester City side that have won three Premier League titles in the past four campaigns.

Laporte previously spent eight years in Spain with Athletic Bilbao after signing for the club as a teenager, coming through the ranks and making 222 appearances in all competitions before a £58m move to the Etihad in 2018.

The 26-year-old was granted Spanish citizenship last week after making an application in a bid to change his international allegiance, with the BBC reporting that FIFA having now approved his switch with ‘immediate effect’.

Laporte will now be available for selection for this summer’s European Championship as Spain look to regain the trophy they won twice in succession in 2008 and 2012, La Roja facing Sweden, Poland and Slovakia in Group E.
