Fifa president Gianni Infantino has announced plans for a new 32-team men’s Club World Cup, with the first tournament set to take place for the first time in 2025.

They also announced Morocco as hosts of the 2022 Club World Cup and plans to launch an equivalent women’s tournament.

The new men’s competition will take place in the summer before the 2026 World Cup, when the Confederations Cup is usually held.

Reports in the Mirror and Daily Mail earlier this week suggested Champions League clubs would reject the proposal for the new format.

Plans for a 24-team Club World Cup was announced by Fifa in 2019, with the competition set to begin in 2021, but those plans were put on ice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Those plans were due to include eight European teams — the Champions League and Europa League winners from the previous four seasons — and it is unclear how 32 teams will be selected for a tournament.
