FIFA have confirmed the final nominees for The Best Women’s Player of the Year for 2022.

A total of 14 players had initially been up for contention for their performances from August 2021 to July 2022 but they have now been narrowed down to the final three.

And they are:

  • Beth Mead (Arsenal and England)
  • Alex Morgan (San Diego Wave and USA)
  • Alexia Putellas (Barcelona and Spain)

Mead is up for the honour after winning both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament en route to helping England to European Championship glory and also netted 11 WSL goals last season before cruelly sustaining an ACL injury in October.

A legend of the women’s game who hasn’t yet won this award (coming closest with a runner-up place in 2019), Morgan has been on fire in her maiden season in San Diego where she has netted 15 goals in 17 NWSL games and also netted the winner in the CONCACAF Championship final, in addition to finishing as top scorer and Player of the Tournament.

Like Mead, Putellas is also a long-term absentee with an ACL issue but is the reigning holder of this honour and could become the first player ever to defend it if she is successful again this year.
