FIFA 23's Metacritic score after a month is not good at all

FIFA 23 has been out for a month now, with the gameplay undergoing quite a noticeable change to previous editions of the game, although most gamers appear to not be too fond of the new title from EA Sports.

The initial release for the game saw a pretty poor Metacritic score for the world’s biggest football simulator, although it appears gamers haven’t adapted to the new style of game and still don’t rate it highly.

Obviously, over a month, things change, with small updates and patches, although nothing appears to have done the trick for EA with FIFA 23.

FIFA 23’s major changes

With the new release, EA have gone further than ever with in-game changes, including a new system to take free kicks and corners, a completely revamped chemistry system in Ultimate Team, and with the accelerate style, everything has changed.

In previous years, if your player didn’t have 90+ for pace, agility and balance, they were pretty much unusable, with players like Erling Haaland not really that good in-game, however, this year, his stats are almost identical, but he is one of the best strikers on the game.

That’s not to say your typical, small nimble players are useless now, they still can be utilised for certain styles of play, it just makes all cards usable rather than a select few.

However, most people aren’t a fan of that, with the game scoring just 2.2 on the website, with 33 positive scores, eight mixed scores and a whopping 136 negative ones.

One player commented: “This game is complete garbage. It is literally the exact same game as the last. All the lazy developers did was slap 23 on the cover and called it a day.”

Another added: “I would give less than zero but you can’t…”

Whilst someone else rated the game with the following justification: “It’s just not fun anymore, thankfully EA losing the FIFA license, we may end up with a real football game. EA you will not be missed.”

Someone else weighed in with: “Absolutely ruined this game. Probably 1 of the worst football games I’ve ever played do not buy!!”

As another comment read: “If you want the things to change for the better, stop buying this trash each year. It’s the only reason they get away with it.”

FIFA 23 honest review

There are certainly problems with the game, the main ones being the pay to win nature of the most popular game mode Ultimate Team, with buying more packs the best way to get ahead of the competition with buying a better team. On top of this, the Trivela shot appears to be broken, however that is the only seriously broken mechanic in the game.

Normally, there are plenty of mechanics to exploit and abuse, but thankfully that is lacking on this year’s edition of the game, with the ‘lengthy’ centre backs able to keep up with quicker strikers making the game much more realistic as we see that happen all the time in real football, although getting used to it can be frustrating, I’ll grant you that.

The fact there is no clear meta this year and all types of players are genuinely usable is a huge improvement, the game has been stale for a while with stupid mechanics, but that appears to be behind us in the main. The only thing that really lets the game down is how much it is pay to win or reliant on silly levels of pack luck to get better teams, it isn’t overly rewarding for grafting, however given the money making potential, this won’t change in a hurry!
