Chelsea star Sam Kerr will reportedly join Kylian Mbappé on the front cover of FIFA 23.
With the trailer for FIFA 23 set to be released later this month, anticipation for the latest edition of the football video game is building.
As excitement grows, more information about FIFA 23 is being leaked, and the latest piece of news has left women’s football fans incredibly excited.
According to Donk Trading, Australian striker Kerr has earned a spot alongside Mbappé on the cover of the game.
The 23-year-old Mbappé, who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain, has been the game’s cover star for the past two editions. But he has previously appeared by himself, so will now have to make room for another icon.
Kerr has truly established herself as one of the best in women’s football, earning her second successive Golden Boot in the Women’s Super League last season.
In fact, she is the only player to win the Golden Boot in three different leagues – the NWSL, the W-League and the WSL.
The 28-year-old is also a star for her country, with many of her 110 appearances for Australia coming over three World Cups and two Olympic Games.
Kerr will not be the first female footballer on the cover of FIFA – to mark the introduction of women’s teams to FIFA 16, Steph Catley featured on the Australian edition and Alex Morgan on the US edition.
But Kerr’s inclusion would be a sign of efforts by EA Sports to increase female representation in the game.
Women’s teams have featured in the popular franchise since FIFA 16, but only international sides up until this point.
Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, and the United States were the 12 teams initially added to the game.
This has since been expanded to include Belgium, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and Scotland.
Gamers can currently play as women in FIFA 22’s Pro Clubs mode, and former Arsenal star Alex Scott became the first English-speaking female broadcaster on the game this year.
All the signs point towards the inclusion of domestic women’s football teams on EA Sports FC, the new branding for the game following the end of EA’s two-decade long partnership with FIFA.
Women’s football teams have also been used across the branding for EA Sports FC, which is set to be released next year.
