Sheffield United are paying around a third of Ciaran Clark’s wages during his spell on loan at Bramall Lane from Newcastle United, a report from The Telegraph has claimed.

Having seemingly dropped down the pecking order at St James’ Park, Clark was allowed to leave Newcastle in the summer transfer window, in search of more regular game time.

That is something that saw him make the move to Bramall Lane, where he joined Sheffield United on a season-long loan.

However, the deal has so far proved frustrating for those involved, with injury restricting the centre back to just three appearances for the Blades so far.

Now though, it seems that the Championship promotion chasers are not losing out as much financially during his absence, as may have been the case.

According to this latest update, Newcastle are still paying around two thirds of Clark’s £40,000-per-week wages, while the 33-year-old is on loan at Sheffield United.

Yes No

As a result, the Blades, who currently sit top of the second-tier standings, are paying Clark just under £14,000-per-week for his services at Bramall Lane.

The Verdict

This does look like being a rather useful piece of business that Sheffield United have managed to do here.

Admittedly, a wage of £14,000-per-week does feel like it would still be a considerable for many clubs at Championship level to be paying to a single player.

However, when you consider how much they could have been paying given Clark’s overall Newcastle wage, getting it down to what they did may have been vital, in giving more space in the budget to get other deals done.

Considering how big an impact other signings – such as Anel Ahmedhodzic and Reda Khadra – have had since arriving in the summer, that could prove rather telling in the battle for promotion.
