An incredible performance from teenage stat Yankuba Minteh helped ensure that Feyenoord thrashed a shambolic Ajax to increase their chances of a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Scorers: Paixao 34′, 67′, Minteh 36′, 56′, Hancko 45+2′, Timber 62
The home side dominated the early proceedings, but spurned several good opportunities to take the lead in the opening half an hour against an Ajax side that could hardly touch the ball.
Eventually, the pressure told though, and like London buses two goals came at once. First, Yankuba Minteh slipped in fellow winger Igor Paixao for the opener, before a minute later he got a goal of his own, firing home from a Bart Nieuwkoop cutback to leave Ajax staring down the barrel of another defeat.
It got worse for the Dutch giants before half time. A Santiago Gimenez overhead kick from a corner was headed goalwards by defender David Hancko, sending his side into the interval with a three goal cushion and Ajax going the first half without as much as a shot and just a single touch inside the Feyenoord box.
The onslaught showed no signs of letting up after the break, and it took just 10 minutes for Minteh to punish lacklustre defending again, before Quentin Timber rifled home an effort from 25 yards out and Paixao added a second to continue Ajax’s misery.
With the score at 6-0 before the 70th minute and Ajax still yet to have a shot, they finally managed to register an effort on target as the massacre ended, but it was far too little too late.
The result, Ajax’s biggest ever loss in De Klassieker, leaves Feyenoord nine points clear of thirds-placed FC Twente, though they still trail PSV by a massive 9 points. Currently occupying the division’s final Champions League spot for next season, they are in a strong position to keep it come the end of the campaign.
Ajax on the other hand are counting down the days until the end of the season. A massive 24 points behind today’s opponents, they sit sixth and are seven points outside even a UEFA Conference League spot for next season.
