FC Girondins de Bordeaux qualified for the sixth round of the Coupe de France with a 3-0 victory over CMO Bassens on Monday evening. It would be the club’s second consecutive game in the cup played without fans after their previous trip to face FC Seudre Océan (5-0) as both games were played behind closed doors for safety reasons.
Despite not being able to watch the game, Bordeaux supporters came to the stadium to cheer on their team as they arrived for the match. The fanbase could be heard throughout the game as they chanted and set off smoke bombs creating an atmosphere that seeped into the 5,000-seater stadium.
After the game, Bordeaux manager Bruno Irles was quick to applaud the fans. The former ESTAC Troyes and RWD Molenbeek manager hailed the significance of the moment stating in his post-match comments, “Coming on a Monday evening at 8:30 p.m. to support us without watching the match, there are few clubs that have this chance.”
Irles continued his comments, “I hope that we will be able to welcome them during the next round and that they will be able to support us on the field.” Bordeaux will find out who they are playing in the next round of the competition on the 17th of October when their region of the country (Nouvelle-Aquitaine) is drawn.
