América’s interim coach Fernando Ortiz is acutely aware of the need for wins despite a spirited display by his 10-man side in Saturday’s Clásico Nacional at Chivas.
The Azulcrema managed to secure a point despite enduring a numerical disadvantage after Jonathan dos Santos saw red for a dangerously high challenge on Sebastián Pérez Bouquet in the 51st minute.
Ortiz, who was appointed following the sacking of Santiago Solari, lamented the dismissal not only for impacting the visitors’ chances of earning what would have been just their second win of the Clausura, but also the prospect of suspension for the midfielder.
“That is one of the ones we have in mind to be able to get into the play-offs,” the 44-year-old said afterwards.
“We are realistic that a win is urgently needed to be able to shorten the distance with the rivals that we are close to, this point that we get on a difficult field is going to be good if we get the three points against Toluca.
“I’m left with the feeling that if we hadn’t had Jonathan sent off, we could have played a slightly better game to get the three points.”
The point moved América off the foot of the table ahead of Mazatlán on goal difference, but they remain four points outside the play-off places with seven games to play.
