Club America head coach Fernando Ortiz hinted at a potential new signing, revealing: "the priority Today he is a right-back, there are names.”

The Liga MX giants will be looking to replace right-back Jorge Sanchez, who departed amid the 2022 Apertura for Eredivisie’s Ajax.

Following the move, Ortiz opted for Emilio Lara to replace Sanchez. And though the young player did well in the position, the head coach now wants to pair Lara with new signing Israel Reyes at center-back and sign a new figure.

Additionally, defender Burno Valdez will no longer form part of the team’s future plans, giving way for the Lara-Reyes duo to flourish.

"We lack a bit of a right back , it's something we've talked about, it's a position that we have to reinforce. The market is just beginning,” Ortiz said. “We'll see how these days go by, maybe there's interest in some boys and we'll continue like this day by day, but the priority today is a right-back. There are names, but we don't give them out because we already know that it always gets complicated.”

Ortiz went on to specify the figures of interest are Mexican, given the team’s current excess of foreign figures.

Per Liga MX rules, eight homegrown players must be included in each 18-player match day squad and a maximum of 10 non-homegrown players - almost always foreign players - registered with each club.

Additionally, clubs are not allowed to play more than five foreign players in a Liga MX match.

“I still have two days to discuss it with the president, we as the coaching staff consider everyone, the foreign places are time to reduce them because they cannot register so many, we will see in these days before going out to the preseason if they can be added or not.”

The 2023 Liga MX Clausura kicks off on January 6.
