David de Gea will start for Spain against Russia and maintain his place as number one going into the knockout rounds, Fernando Hierro has confirmed.
The Manchester United goalkeeper has come in for some criticism in sections of the Spanish press after an error against Portugal but Hierro has confirmed he will keep his starting spot.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Radio Nacional, Hierro responded with a sharp ‘yes’ when asked whether De Gea would start between the sticks against the hosts.
The Spain boss, handed the job right before the World Cup commenced following the sacking of Julian Lopetegui, also hinted that Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa may start upfront.
Should Spain defeat Russia, De Gea and Co will then face the victor of Denmark vs Croatia in the quarter-finals.
