Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro has revealed that he considered a move to América late in his career.
The centre-back, who won five LaLiga titles and three Champions Leagues with Los Blancos, explained the situation to the Vamos América programme.
“I’m going to tell you one thing, there was a possibility (of joining the Azulcrema) when I left Madrid, what happens is that it didn’t come out,” the 53-year-old said.
As it transpired, Hierro would join Qatari side Al-Rayyan before finishing his career with a season at Bolton in 2004/05.
The former Spain international played alongside current América boss Santiago Solari at the Santiago Bernabéu, and was full of praise for the Argentine who later learned his coaching trade at Madrid.
“Santi had the opportunity to train the boys from the academy and we know that when there is a coach from the academy, close to the first team, it is an option, for him it was an unparalleled experience, not every day you train Real Madrid,” Hierro said.
“For me he did a fantastic job, it was not an easy stage. That toughened him up a lot to take on the responsibility of the magnitude of América, with all the demand, possibly in Mexico the closest thing to Madrid.
Solari will be hoping Las Águilas can pick up their first win of the 2022 Clausura when they host Atlético San Luis next Saturday.
