Flamengo are reportedly lining up Manchester City’s Fernandinho as an alternative signing should a deal with Arturo Vidal not be completed in the coming months.
Vidal, who has made no secret of his desire to represent the Rubro-Negro, is understood to be in negotiations over salary ahead of the summer transfer window.
Journalist Thiago Asmar, via his ‘Philado’ YouTube channel, claims that much progress has been made with the 34-year-old Inter Milan midfielder.
“The chance for Vidal to close with Flamengo has never been so great as it is today,” Asmar said.
However with Fernandinho announcing recently that will he return to Brazil at the end of the season after nine trophy-laden years at the Etihad, the veteran has become an option should the Vidal deal fall through.
“Fernandinho can probably be a ‘plan B’,” Asmar said, although he noted that the former Brazil international’s age (36) is a concern for the Rubro-Negro hierarchy.
Flamengo will host their first game of the 2022 Brasileirão when they face São Paulo on Sunday.
