Newcastle United, at St James’ Park, have been a ‘bogey’ team for Chelsea in recent years. But the in-form Blues proved to be too hot to handle when they clinched a thumping 2-0 win after dominating the show all afternoon upon the return of Premier League football following the international break.

Below are the Newcastle United players rated in their disappointing defeat against Chelsea.

Karl Darlow: 6.5

Could have done little to stop Federico Fernandez who scored a comical own goal in early minutes. But the custodian did well to deny the likes of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham later on and kept the Magpies in contention for more than an hour. Abraham doubled the lead around 65th-minute mark after Werner’s individual brilliance and therefore, ensured all three points for the visitors guiding them to secure the leading status for the time being.

Javier Manquillo: 5.5

Neither the Spaniard offered his presence high up the pitch with marauding runs nor he succeeded to keep things calm at the back being dominated by Werner all throughout. Was taken off to be replaced by Miguel Almiron after Abraham’s goal.

Federico Fernandez: 4.5

His bizarre own goal earned Chelsea a perfect start. He was not at all commanding during the rest of the match and failed to contain the dynamic duo of Abraham and Werner who kept on threatening with their pace, power and tricky runs.

Jamaal Lascelles: 7

The skipper was excellent as long as he was on the pitch. Kept on making crucial blocks and interceptions but suffered an injury that forced him to miss the second half.

Ciaran Clark: 6

Won a few duels but was clumsy with his tackles and never looked settled in deep defence. Lacked pace against the Blues’ lethal attacking half and was often found out of position when the Londoners were attacking in numbers.

Jamal Lewis: 5.5

Struggled down the left-hand side of Newcastle’s ‘back five’. Offered little going forward and often found it difficult against Hakim Ziyech who kept on exhibiting his creative spark.

Jacob Murphy: 5.5

Made a few impressive runs, but his efforts were mostly purposeless with no end product. Chelsea had little trouble in keeping the wide attacker under control.

Isaac Hayden: 6

Was mostly busy in marshalling the backline and often left space in the middle of the park allowing the Blues to dominate the midfield game.

Sean Longstaff: 7.5

The youngster had his moments as he tried to switch it across the pitch with his passing and possessional football. But he badly needed someone alongside him to retain the ball and became ineffective eventually against the likes of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic. One of his exquisite efforts hit the woodwork as well.

Allan Saint-Maximin: 6

The winger has it all to make a name in English football, but he must learn not to overdo things and keep things simple with the ball at his feet. He dribbles too much at times which allows the opponents to regain the shape before blocking him from pulling the trigger. This afternoon was no different either and the Frenchman was taken off late in the second half to be replaced by Andy Carroll.

Joelinton: 5

The Magpies’ record signing has been a disaster as he once again failed miserably to convert his chances while featuring as the lone centre-forward. He was handed a start in the absence of Callum Wilson but rarely posed threat in Chelsea defence despite having a golden opportunity to find an equalizer.

Substitutes

Fabian Schar: 5.5

Came in place of skipper Lascelles but failed to replicate a similar show in the heart of the central defence.

Miguel Almiron: 5.5

Was lively with his work rate, link-up play and directness but could not make a difference during the final half an hour.

Andy Carroll: 5.5

Had a great opportunity in the stoppage time to grab a consolation goal but failed to hit the target as his attempt hit the outside of the net.
