Manchester United came from behind to trash Roma 6-2 in the Europa League semi-finals first leg at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

However, Lorenzo Pellegrini from the penalty spot, and Edin Dzeko replied as Roma took the lead before the first half break.

However, coming in after the break, the dynamics of the game changed totally. Paulo Fonseca’s inability to freshen up his Roma side cost them greatly, as the Italian side suffered.

Man United drew level early in the second period, with a sublime strike from Edinson Cavani, via an assist from Bruno Fernandes. The equalizer proved costly for Roma as the teams’ confidence was dented greatly.

Cavani then put United in the lead in the 60th minute, after pouncing on a rebound from Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s saved effort.

Former Reds player Chris Smalling, conceded a penalty for a foul on Cavani, giving Fernandes the opportunity to lash in another goal to further extend their victory.

The goal scoring didn’t end there, as Paul Pogba sent in a glancing header following a corner kick to extend Manchester United’s lead even further, making it 5-2 and effectively killing off the tie barring something unbelievable in the second leg in Rome on May 6.

Substitute Mason Greenwood then put the game to bed, as he lashed in another goal to make it 6-2, giving the tie a glaring repeat of 2007 when Man United beat Roma 7-1 in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. The result also means Ole Solskjaer might have ended his semi-final hurdle at United. It also means the Red Devils now have a good chance to secure the first silverware under Solskjaer at the club.
