The former management team over at theRangers have settled comfortably back into their old jobs in the Scottish mainstream media after failing to impress in their temporary caretaker role at Ibrox, after poor results dashed their collective hopes of a more permanent stay at the club Charles Green founded in 2012.
Before being placed in temporary charge at Ibrox after the sacking of the Balgia Waffler Philippe Clement, Barry Ferguson, Neil McCann, and Billy Dodds were mainstays in the Scottish media, featuring on a host of channels such as the BBC, Premier Sports and the popular Go Radio. All three were regulars on the screens, and the airwaves as well as regularly featuring on the written press. Ferguson, the former Rangers FC captain also had a weekly newspaper column.

Naturally it appeased theRangers support to see such staunch Rangers men take their place in Ibrox dugout after they chased Clement out of Glasgow. Remember, theRangers lost to Queen’s Park at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup last season which was one of the biggest shock results ever in Scottish football with even Bitcasino struggling to pay such attractive payouts.
So things certainly had gone badly wrong last season ahead of the return of the former club’s legends. They were real the Rangers minded men, even though none of them ever actually played for the 13 year old club, that is an inconvenient truth that is conveniently forgotten over at Ibrox.
Their appointments however left a gaping hole in the Scottish media, with BBC Scotland in particular feeling the loss more than anyone as they suffered something of a doublewhammy after losing two of their main pundits at the same time. Things were getting so bad that they had to bring in Scott Allan, a Rangers supporter who had been a former Celtic player, and that was the best that they could muster for Sportscene – a programme that is actually presented by a former Rangers player, Steven Thompson.
But it turned out to be a short-lived crisis for the BBC. They needn’t have worried as after a few months pretending to be top football coaches, the trio were all back in their old jobs. Both McCann and Dodds were pundits in a recent game at Ibrox, whilst Ferguson was back in his old seat in the Go Radio studios.
All three have their feet firmly back under the table, along with a host of other figures who have a connection with both sides who played out of Ibrox.
Names like the aforementioned Stephen Thompson, Alex Rae, Derek Ferguson, Kris Boyd, and Andy Halliday to name just a few. Further proof that the SMSM is literally a guaranteed post retirement gig for ex-players or managers who have an affiliation with the two clubs who have played out of Ibrox.
