Rio Ferdinand has revealed what ‘surprised’ him about Frank Lampard’s managerial style after being left impressed following a visit to watch the Chelsea boss in action.

Ferdinand paid his former West Ham and England teammate a visit for last week as part of a feature for BT Sport, visiting Lampard at the club’s training ground in order to gain an insight into his coaching style as the Blues’ boss navigates his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard’s Chelsea currently sit fourth in the Premier League, although their Champions League campaign looks set to end at the last 16 stage after a sobering 3-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich last night.

Ferdinand has revealed that he was left surprised by a noticeable change in the 41-year-old’s demeanour since making the move into management.

“When we played, [Lampard would never speak], but I went to the training ground, Frank Lampard the manager is the most prominent, loudest voice on the training ground,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“Barking orders, authority was there in his voice from the word go.

“I was so impressed with the way he coached the team, it surprised me yeah.

“I was really looking forward to see what he was going to be like as a manager, as a coach on the training field and I’ve got nothing but positives to say about that experience of seeing that.”
