Ferdinand ‘not convinced’ Gyokeres right signing for Man United

Rio Ferdinand has questioned whether Viktor Gyokeres is the ‘right guy’ for Manchester United to sign this summer.

Gyokeres has been heavily linked with Manchester United having worked with Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon. In Portugal, Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 games over the last two seasons to attract interest from across Europe.

The Swedish striker has set his sights on an exit from Sporting and Old Trafford has been named as a potential destination. United scored just 44 league goals last season, the fifth-lowest return in the Premier League.

Despite Gyokeres’ goal record, Ferdinand says he is not convinced the 27-year-old is the right signing for his former team.

“Is he [Gyokeres] the right guy? Listen, he has some really good attributes, I’ve not seen enough to be totally convinced,” he told talkSPORT.

“When I’ve seen him in the Champions League, when people match him up physically, I’d love to see more in that sense.

“But there’s no denying he knows where the goal is. In Portugal, he’s been banging them in left, right and centre.

“For Manchester United at this moment in time, I’d go for experience more than anything.

Ferdinand favours Osimhen over Gyokeres for Manchester United

“And someone like Osimhen, who has experience, played in multiple leagues, has produced at every level that he’s played at, knows his way around a football pitch…

“Not just for the first team playing now, but also for Hojlund and Chido Obi, for Zirkzee, for these guys to look at someone and see it as a reference point of how to play as a No.9.

“I think if I was going to go for one of them, I’d go for Osimhen.”
