Striker Edin Dzeko admits his departure from Inter Milan was “strange” but says he came to understand why he ended up leaving.

The Bosnian international, currently at Fenerbahce, spoke to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews.

Dzeko spent two years as an Inter player.

The former Manchester City and Wolfsburg striker joined the Nerazzurri from Roma in the summer of 2021.

And the seasons that Dzeko was at Inter were fairly successful ones.

Inter were not able to win the Serie A title with Dzeko. That is a trophy that eluded the Bosnian despite years being prolific for both the Giallorossi and the Nerazzurri.

But the Nerazzurri did win the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana in both Dzeko’s seasons at the club.

Moreover, Dzeko started for Inter in the Champions League final of the 2022-23 season.

Edin Dzeko: “Inter Milan Departure Was Strange, But Eventually I Understood”

Dzeko departed from Inter at the end of his contract in the summer of 2023.

The Nerazzurri club directors have not hidden the fact that a big part of the reason for this was that they expected to be bringing Romelu Lukaku back permanently from Chelsea.

“If that’s what they chose, it means that everyone agreed with it, the coach and directors,” said Dzeko.

“It seemed like a strange decision to me,” the 38-year-old continued.

“Because when you have a player who started in all the important matches, including the Champions League final, and you can keep him for nothing, and having four strikers in the squad…”

“It seemed very strange to me,” Dzeko admitted.

“But then eventually I understood it, and respected it.”

“Also because they always treated me very well at Inter,” Dzeko said. “They were two great years, and certainly reaching the Champions League final…”

Dzeko said that “of course” he still thinks back to the Champions League final against Manchester City.

“It’s a big regret,” he said of that final.”

“Every now and then I see the City goal on Instagram,” Dzeko said.

“And I immediately switch it to something else. I can’t watch it.”

“Experiencing that match from inside it, I had a strong feeling that we could have done it,” Dzeko said.

“And that’s what leaves me with a certain bitter feeling.”
