Manchester City are set to welcome the sporting director of Fenerbahce in the coming days to discuss a remarkable potential transfer, according to Turkish media.

The latest emerging reports concern the future of Mateo Kovacic, who despite only joining Manchester City’s project during the previous summer transfer window, faces an uncertain future, if the latest information is accurate.

The 30-year-old Croatian is on the verge of returning to Manchester City’s training ground schedule and the club have confirmed that the midfielder will be present in the United States with his teammates in preparation for their second pre-season content against AC Milan.

City take on the Italian giants at New York’s iconic Yankee Stadium after they face Celtic in North Carolina on Tuesday evening, with Kovacic expected to joined by Josko Gvardiol as Manchester City’s European Championship contingent filter back into action.

But between now and Kovacic’s return to duties, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid man could be subject to transfer interest from one of Turkey’s premier clubs, now managed by iconic Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho.

According to the information of Turkish media outlet Dirilis Postasi, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Mateo Kovacic has emerged as an option for Fenerbahce and the club’s sporting director Mario Branco will fly to England this week to hold transfer talks.

It is claimed that Branco hopes to have talks with both Mateo Kovacic himself as well as Manchester City, and then a decision will be made on whether the club managed by Jose Mourinho will make an attempt to sign him.

Etihad Stadium officials secured the signing of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in a deal worth in the region of £30 million last summer, as the club looked to come to terms with the free agent exit of legendary figure Ilkay Gundogan.

Gundogan brought an end to his time at Manchester City by joining FC Barcelona in La Liga, fresh off the back of captaining the squad to their first-ever UEFA Champions League honour as part of a historic Treble success.

Alongside Kovacic, Manchester City also recruited Portugal international Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton Wanderers towards the end of the window with Kevin De Bruyne succumbing to a long-term lay-off through recovery from hamstring surgery.

This summer could yet see Manchester City recruit further in the centre of the park, and potentially on more than one occasion, with Etihad chiefs looking for suitable cover to Rodrigo in defensive midfield, as well as part of a succession plan for future creative options.
