América moved top of the Guard1anes 2021 table after Federico Viñas came off the bench to head the winner against León on Saturday.
Scorers: Martín 6′, Viñas 90+2; Dávila 1′.
There was a sensational opening to proceeedings at the Estadio Azteca with León opening the scoring after just 15 seconds.
The defending Liga MX champions kept possession from kick-off and cut through the Azulcrema defence with ease before Víctor Dávila slid his shot past the exposed Guillermo Ochoa.
América recovered well from that setback, however, and drew level just five minutes later.
Mauro Laínez clipped in a nice cross from the left flank and Henry Martín made the most of some slack defending to glance a header home.
Las Águilas missed a glorious opportunity to take the lead when Sebastián Córdova was felled in the penalty area early in the second half.
Emanuel Aguilera’s spot-kick crashed off the crossbar and he made a bad situation worse by sending a tame effort wide after the ball had inadvertently hit goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota.
But Viñas would save his team-mate’s blushes, with the Uruguayan in the headlines for positive reasons again after the recent debacle at Atlas.
The win sees América go a point ahead of Mexico City rival Cruz Azul, with La Máquina not in action until Sunday at Pumas.
