Federico Viñas has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the last two years, going from playing in Uruguay’s second division to being the subject of European rumours at Club América.
The 21-year-old is already a cult hero in Mexico after his sensational first season in Mexico which saw him not only score seconds into his debut in the Clásico Capitalino, but also score second-leg goals in each round of the Liguilla.
Following his participation in Uruguay’s Olympic qualifying run, Viñas scored a brace in his comeback and another goal in the Clásico Capitalino to take his total to eight goals in just 18 games.
América have activated their purchase option for the player and could easily make a quick profit if they wanted to. However, Viñas isn’t thinking about a move abroad just yet.
“For now I am not thinking about Europe,” the young Uruguayan forward said.
“I think that América doesn’t have a reason to envy any European club.”
Viñas is also remaining humble about his national team chances, knowing that there’s an enormous amount of quality up top.
“There are many high-level forwards who are currently in the national team. There may be many like Suárez and many like (Edinson) Cavani.
“I am doing my thing and I focus on doing the best day by day.”
