Chelsea return to UEFA Women’s Champions League action this week when they welcome Spanish giants Real Madrid to Kingsmeadow on Wednesday evening.

The Blues have won two out of two in the group stage so far, scoring nine and conceding zero. Meanwhile, Real Madrid have taken four points from an available six and are well-placed to challenge for qualification for the quarter-finals themselves.

Ahead of Chelsea’s latest fixture, FAWSL Full-Time have been looking at the match facts provided by UEFA. Here are three things that you need to know about The Blues’ fixture against Real Madrid.

Chelsea have a good recent record in the UEFA Women’s Champions League

Chelsea have lost just one of their last eight UEFA Women’s Champions League matches (W5 D2). The Blues’ only loss since their 2020/2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League final defeat to FC Barcelona came at the hands of German club VfL Wolfsburg in last season’s group stage.

Goal-fest or a low-scoring affair?

Both Chelsea and Real Madrid have kept five clean sheets in their last six UEFA Women’s Champions League ties. At the other end of the pitch, the South West Londoners have netted 19 goals in their last six matches while Real Madrid have scored 14. With so much on the line at Kingsmeadow, it would be no surprise to see Chelsea and Real Madrid find goals unusually hard to come by, although there is plenty of match-winning talent in the two squads.

Real Madrid become Chelsea’s third Spanish opponents

Real Madrid will become Chelsea’s third Spanish opponents in the UEFA Women’s Champions League later this week. The Blues previously defeated Atlético Madrid 3-1 on aggregate in the last-16 in 2020/2021 while Emma Hayes’ side lost 4-0 to FC Barcelona in the final in the same season.

In back-to-back UEFA Women’s Champions League campaigns, Real Madrid have been paired with English club Manchester City. They beat The Cityzens 2-1 on aggregate in Round 2 last season before dumping the same opponents out of the competition in this year’s Round 1 final.
