The Gunners have not lifted European silverware since winning the old UEFA Women’s Cup back in 2007. With the North Londoners behind in the Barclays Women’s Super League title race, the UEFA Women’s Champions League might be their best opportunity to add a second trophy to the cabinet this season.
Ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Germany, FAWSL Full-Time have been reviewing the UEFA match statistics. Here are three points to note about The Gunners’ latest European fixture.
Bayern’s home record in Europe is solid
Bayern Munich have won 12 of their last 13 UEFA Women’s Champions League home games (L1), a run which includes seven wins in their last eight. Paris Saint-Germain’s victory at the Allianz Arena in last season’s competition is the German club’s only recent home defeat in Europe. Bayern Munich are also currently enjoying a 12-match winning streak on home soil in all competitions.
English sides still seeking success in Munich
Bayern Munich have beaten English opposition twice on home soil in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Chelsea were the side that were twice conquered by the German club. Bayern Munich recorded 2-1 home wins over The Blues in 2017/2018 and 2020/2021.
A quarter-final against German opposition a bad mix for Arsenal
Arsenal’s recent record in UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals is a poor one. The North Londoners are without a win in their last five UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final matches (D1 L4). Furthermore, Arsenal have recorded just three victories in 14 UEFA Women’s Champions League matches against German clubs (D2 L9) while they have lost six of their previous seven European matches away to German opposition (W1).
Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg tie against Bayern Munich kicks-off at 5.45pm on Tuesday evening.
