Wout Brama will retire from professional football at the end of the season, FC Twente have announced. The 36-year-old defensive midfielder has played 399 times for FC Twente over two separate spells. Brama was part of the Twente team that lifted the Eredivisie title during the 09/10 campaign. The season after, he helped the side lift the KNVB Cup. Brama will say farewell to Twente fans during Sunday’s home game against Ajax.

‘It’s been great’, Brama said via the club website. ‘I still enjoy it a lot, play in a nice team, play football for the club I love to play for, but my role will become more and more marginal next season. During the conversations, the club has been very clear to me about this. Last week I made the decision for myself.’

‘I knew the end of my football career was coming,’ Brama continued. ‘When I returned from Australia in 2018, my idea was to play two more seasons at FC Twente. I am now in my fifth year. It has become more beautiful than I could have imagined before my return. It’s not easy to stop playing football when that’s your passion, but I’m also looking forward to doing other things again.’

Speaking about his future, Brama said ‘I’m not quite sure myself what I want to do next. It has to slowly find a place with myself and the club. We will discuss the future together. It is obvious that I will stay connected to FC Twente. I like the fact that I was able to experience many beautiful moments and win prizes at the club where I grew up and am a supporter. I am very grateful to FC Twente for that.’ After 13 seasons with FC Twente and over 350 Eredivisie appearances, Brama will hang up his boots. The midfielder also had spells with PEC Zwolle, FC Utrecht and the Central Coast Mariners in Australia.
