FC Twente are strongly considering a summer departure for Mees Hilgers. Technical director Jan Streuer is reportedly aware of international interest in the defender.

The 24-year-old Hilgers has only one year left on his contract in Enschede and apparently has no intention of extending it.

“Mees has already indicated several times that he wants to take the next step, and we’ve already acted on that in the transfer market,” says Streuer, referring to the signing of Israeli Stav Lemkin who joined from Maccabi Tel Aviv.

“You can wait until a player leaves, but then it might already be mid-August,” Streuer explained the strategy to VI. “If Mees does stay, we’ll have an extra player at the back. But I’m not counting on that. We also know he’s on the radar of foreign clubs. There haven’t been any bids yet, but it’s still quite early. A lot is going to happen this summer.”
