FC Rouen announce surprising Champions League ambition

In recent times, FC Rouen are remembered as the minnow that pulled off an impressive run to the quarter-finals of last season’s Coupe de France, beating AS Monaco and Toulouse FC in the process, before ultimately losing to Valenciennes.

It wasn’t the most spectacular campaign in the league, however, as they finished seventh in National 1, France’s third tier. With just one win, they currently sit 12th this season, however, their president has big ambitions.

Dutchman Iwan Postel recently became president of the French club and he has designs on taking them places. Talking to France 3 Normandie, he outlined his plans for Rouen. He said that the “minimum ambition” is to be in Ligue 2 in the short term and in the medium term, to be in Ligue 1. He added that the club needs “to go up a level” every two years.

He then revealed a surprising ambition. “People will say that I’m mad but I have the ambition for FC Rouen to be in the UEFA Champions League in seven years,” said Postel. After years of instability at the French club, the Dutchman is very much looking to put Rouen back on the footballing map.
