Club kicked off its 10th Champions League campaign in style with a 1-0 win over Leverkusen last week. Next up is the trip to Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto. Find out all there is to konw about our CL campaign, and our opponents here.
Last week's sole goal came courtesy of Abakar Sylla, scoring Club Brugge's 500th goal in 336 European fixtures in 51 campaigns. A new record for Club too in Belgium, taking part for the fifth consecutive season in the UEFA Champions League group stages.
Some milestones lie ahead for the following players:
- Hans Vanaken is up for a 350th appearance at Blauw-Zwart, closing the top 10 of players with the most games at Club.
- Playing time for Denis Odoi would mean he has featured in 25 games at Club.
- For Bjorn Meijer & Casper Nielsen, this could be their tenth game since joining Club.
Quite the prize cabinet for Portuguese legends FC Porto: not only have they won the home league on 30 occasions, they have also won the World Cup for clubs twice, the Europacup/Champions League (2x), the Europa League (2x) & the European Supercup. The last CL win dates back to 2004, and 2011 was the year they last won the Europa League. Last season's CL ended in group stages, and set the team up in the EL's Round of 16, where it was ousted by Olympique Lyon.
Last season's home league win came after 29 wins, four draws and just the one defeat. Trailing behind Braga and leaders Benfica, Porto currently holds third position in the Liga Portugal BWin.
Without a doubt the best-known name at the Portuguese side is that of Pepe, defending Real Madrid's colours for years on end. Last season's FC Porto top scorer is Mehdi Taremi, scoring 20 last season, followed by Luis Diaz (14). The latter headed for greener pastures during the Summer mercato (Liverpool F.C.).
The CL opener did not exactly go as planned. Injury time proved quite eventful, to say the least, with Hermose putting Atlético in the lead in the 91st minute, only to see the score levelled again by Uribe from the spot in Minute 96. A draw seemed in the making, but Antoine Griezmann decided differently, tapping in the 2-1 by the far post in the 101st minute..
Last weekend, FC Porto beat newly promoted GD Chaves at home 3-0.
FC Porto will be setting the stage for tonight's encounter at its illustrious home base Estádio do Dragão, holding 50,033 seats.
