FC Metz sister club RFC Seraing suffer back to back relegations and return to the third tier of Belgian football | OneFootball

After their 2-1 defeat at home to Deinze on the final day of the season, RFC Seraing have been relegated from the second tier of Belgian football. The side have suffered the embarassment of back to back relegations, having only dropped out of the Pro League last season. This ends a four year spell for the side outside of the third tier of Belgian football.

RFC Seraing have fallen just as fast as they rose. The side, linked to Metz in Ligue 1, were able to bring in talented players such as Georges Mikautadze to help them rise through the leagues and end up in the top flight. They survived their first season in the top tier, but after Metz themselves were relegated to Ligue 2 they could no longer rely on the flow of loanees from their French benefactor. In the end, their shoestring budget meant they could never really compete in the top flight.

Despite Metz’s return to the top flight of French football, the flow of talent failed to materialise for this current season. While there were some players who made the move across the border, it was not enough to help the side stabilise in the second tier. Former Zulte Waregem and Standard Liege head coach Mbaye Leye was brought in at the end of January to help try and keep the side in the league. He did manage to improve their form slightly with three wins, five draws and five defeats in 13 games, but this was not enough to save them from relegation.
