Following a 2-1 first-leg defeat at Stade Geoffroy Guichard, Les Grenats managed to get themselves back into the tie in the home leg, forcing extra time after winning 2-1 in 90 minutes thanks to goals from Lamine Camara and Georges Mikautadze, the home side having gone down to 10 men after just six minutes after Papa Amadou Diallo’s red card.

After a heroic effort to reach 90 minutes still in the tie following Léo Petrot’s goal for the away side in the first half, Metz finally succumbed to Ibrahima Wadji’s strike with just three minutes of extra time remaining, sealing their relegation to Ligue 2 whilst Les Verts will take their place in Ligue 1 next season.

After wild celebrations, Saint-Étienne took to X to apologise for the damage: “Even if the group tried to repair the obviously accidental damage caused, we would like to offer our sincerest apologies. Good luck to FC Metz for next season.” whilst also including a video of the aforementioned jubilant post-match scenes.
