FC Bayern Women return to European action this week as they host Valerenga at the FC Bayern Campus for Matchday 3 of the 2024/25 UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage on Tuesday. Kick-off is at 9pm CET. You can watch the match live and for free via DAZN’s YouTube channel. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the game.
Bayern have a perfect haul of six points from their opening two games in the section, having beaten Arsenal 5-2 at home and then winning 2-0 away at Juventus. In the Bundesliga, Alexander Straus’s team sit third after nine rounds of fixtures, only behind Eintracht Frankfurt in second on goal difference and two points off Wolfsburg after Friday’s 2-2 draw away at Freiburg.
The Munich Frauen will now meet Valerenga and indeed Norwegian opposition for the first time as the group stage reaches its halfway point. Bayern go into the game with real momentum after a run of just one defeat in their last 11 group fixtures and a streak of eight without defeat at home in the Champions League.
Glódís Viggósdóttir is set to make her 25th Champions League appearance for Bayern.
The Norwegians are also about to face German opposition for the first time. The domestic champions are competing in the Champions League group stage for the first time after winning all of their four of their qualifier games against Anderlecht and Farul Constanta of Romania. However, Nils Lexerod’s side have been beaten in both fixtures so far in the competition proper against Juventus (1-0) and Arsenal (4-1) to sit bottom of Group C.
Bayern remain without long-term absentees Lena Oberdorf (cruciate ligament), Katharina Naschenweng (knee) and Franziska Kett (ankle). Jovana Damnjanovic (after-effects of a collision against Wolfsburg) and Lea Schüller (after-effects of a collision against Freiburg) will also miss out, as does Sydney Lohmann due to her knee problems. Magdelena Eriksson’s involvement is also in doubt after she could only train individually in the build-up.
Head coach Alexander Straus and his team could take a big step towards the quarter-finals with a win over Valerenga.
Alexander Straus: “With Valerenga I’m expecting a well-organised team that’s already shown against Arsenal and Juventus that they can be dangerous. They’re used to not losing in the Norwegian league, so they’ll play with confidence and make life tough for us.”
Tuva Hansen: “We’re full of confidence after beating Arsenal and Juventus. It’ll be a special game against Norwegians, but we definitely need to perform well if we want to beat them.”
